Janet Gaffney, Ph.D.
As a licensed psychologist, I experience working with children, adolescents, and their families as a rewarding challenge.
During my ten years at Lighthouse, I have treated clients with learning and performance issues (including ADHD and learning disabilities), depression, anxiety, family situational issues (e.g. loss, divorce, parent-child conflicts, foster placement, adoption), social interpersonal problems, and other severe emotional/behavioral disturbances. I have two special interests: 1) making parents “co-experts” by enhancing knowledge and management of their child’s development and problems; and 2) assisting parents and students in navigating school related problems and processes. Years of involvement with student support teams as well as conducting and interpreting psychological evaluations, aid me in partnering with parents and schools to assess and meet the student’s needs. This experience allows me to assist parents in advocating for their child.
I believe it takes not just distress, but courage for both young people and their parents to share their personal and private concerns with professionals like myself. It’s important to have realistic expectations about the therapeutic process, and I invite both parents and children to accept an active role and responsibility in achieving their desired goals. Within the therapy experience I hope to create an environment of confidence, trust, and collaborative effort. I look forward to serving you in excellence.
My educational and training credentials include a BA in Psychology from Spelman College, a doctorate degree in Clinical-Community Psychology from the University of South Carolina, and clinical internship at the Medical College of Georgia and the VA Hospital in Augusta. In addition to private practice, my experience comes from diverse treatment settings including acute inpatient adult psychiatric care, residential treatment for clients with mental retardation, and community mental health.
